Our current key sires

We currently AI over 60% of our cow herd. A range of sires are sourced from throughout New Zealand, Australia and more recently USA. Semen has been imported from Australian Hereford stud – Wirruna Poll Herefords. Two bulls who have made a big impact from this stud are Wirruna Easter E34 and Wirruna Mike M002.

In 2020 we imported semen from Churchill Cattle Company in Montana, USA and was used in our 2020 AI programme. In 2021 we secured semen in Glenbrae Pepper 1907 from Glenbrae Stud. The first calf is on the ground in 2022 at 14 days early.

Bluestone 120061

A key bull that is still showing his quality as a short gestation, easy calving, low birthweight bull. He has been used extensively with CRV Ambreed within the Fertabull and as a single sire. A trait leader for short gestation at
–10.0 and 87% accuracy.

Bluestone Gallipoli 170019

A young homozygous polled bull, currently in the Fertabull programme. He is a trait leader for gestation length at –7.4 with 90% accuracy, and trait leader with birth weight at +1.5 with 89% accuracy. He is also in top 1% for Calving ease direct. He has above average growth with good carcass data. 

Churchill Broadway 858F

An import from the USA, with his first progeny in New Zealand at Bluestone. He was used over heifers and mixed-age cows with great results and no issues, cementing his known short gestation, calving ease, and low birth weight. First sons are available at the 2022 Bull Sale.

Wirruna Easter E34

This bull was the first we imported from Wirruna Poll Herefords in 2011. He has turned into a trait leader for short gestation at –8.4 (96% accuracy) and birth weight –0.8 (97% accuracy). His calving ease is in the top 1%. His daughters remain a stand out in our herd and are the sire of our Bluestone 120061.

Glenbrae Pepper 1907

Glenbrae Pepper is in the top 1% for Gestation Length at -7.1. Has excellent growth from 200 – 600 day weights. Top 1% in Dairy Beef Index and Top 5% in Beef Heifer Index.

Wirruna Mike M002

He was imported a couple of years ago but only in 2019 did we have a number of his progeny on the ground. He is impressing as a bull with very short gestation, low birthweight and calving ease. Wirruna Mike is in the top 1% for our breed, as a trait leader in gestation length –11.5 (95% accuracy) and birth weight –1.9 (96% accuracy).
